The Silent Tongue

James 3:5-6 NKJV
"Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell."

I found my handy scripture sheet for the tongue that I created over twenty years ago. It is my Word of God against the world of iniquity under my control.  I was going to conqueror my tongue, zip it, and do my work. And then technology kicked in. My lips were sealed, but my little world of iniquity had transferred itself from my tongue to its new silent partner, my fingers. That’s right. You all know what I am “typing” about.

Technology provides a way for us not to say a word, keep our mouth shut, and still “say” on screen what we would not say with an open mouth. Technology changes our fast, talking tongues into fast, typing fingers. Many people will not speak profanity aloud or spell out the word on a sheet of paper. However, people can now substitute bad language with acronyms in electronic messages.

Electronic media carries with it the Illusion of privacy.  However, we know the opposite is true: nothing is hidden from the Lord.  I can picture a headline in the spiritual realm: Now begin written in heaven, the contents of electronic messages.

So, my next mission is to revise my scripture sheet to curb my “silent tongue.” Using Proverbs 29:11 (KJV) as an example:
A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise [man] keepeth it in till afterwards.”

I shall modify my scripture sheet to read:

A fool speaks[, emails, tweets, FB, and blogs] all his mind: but a wise [man] keepeth it in till afterwards .

I challenge you to revise your favorite scriptures about the tongue and about watching what you say. Hopefully, we can keep our worlds of iniquity (mouth and fingers) under control.
