Why Do I Believe in God?

I believe because He is all around me in His works and salvation through Jesus has changed my life and my destiny. In my mid-twenties, I became aware that we engage with things unseen daily. I believe that studying the principles of engineering caused me to accept that His exist.

Since we know all people groups are imperfect beings, I decided not to look at the actions and reactions of people to show me who God is. If God is Spirit, I should not expect to evaluate Him based on the people who can be seen with physical eyes. For years, I used the excuse that if God was like His people, I did not want Him. However, the more I read the Bible from a translation in a language that I understood, the more spiritual things began to make sense to me.

While studying the Book of John, I became aware of the paradox of not believing in an unseen God yet believing in the wind. In His awesomeness, Jesus gave us His best example and concrete evidence of His existence, the wind. We cannot see the wind, but we feel it. The wind creates our weather, germinates plants, and is the cause of many other physical processes on the earth. The wind is a powerful force. We have no choice but to believe it exists — site unseen.

I visited a man in a nursing home who was missing all his extremities and some facial features due to a fiery car crash. I was shocked at his physical appearance. This experience was vital because it caused me to realize that I am more than just a body. All my life, I had assumed that my body was who I am, and I had a soul that was a mystery to me. I read that God is Spirit, and we must worship Him in spirit (my spirit) and truth (John 4:24). I had no clue what that meant until I reflected on the man in the nursing home. He had to communicate with only what was inside of him.

Lastly, I felt the need to have a one-on-one relationship with someone who would love me and was wiser than myself. The Lord has proven His omniscience repeatedly by intervening in situations where I had no control and lacked the inner strength to face them alone.

If you are not a believer in Jesus, I challenge you to do what you are doing or have done with your earthly career. You studied to gain knowledge of and instruction on whatever you wanted to do in life. The reason for any pursuit is to become a better you and to do things that are beyond your current self. Why not do the same thing to know our heavenly Father and His son, Jesus?  If He is real, after increasing your knowledge of Him and following the instructions from this endeavor, you will have proof of His existence.

In the words of King David, "Oh, taste and see that the LORD [is] good; Blessed [is] the man [who] trusts in Him!" (Psalms 34:8 NKJV).
